VIP Formal Wear uses the following tuxedo measurement guide as a tool for customers interested in renting a tuxedo. Follow the steps outlined here, record your measurements, and contact a VIP menswear specialist to schedule an in-person fitting.
Neck — Gently wrap a measuring tape around your neck, leaving two-fingers space between your neck and the tape. Record the measurement at the point where the tape meets at the Adam’s apple.
Sleeve — Without wearing a coat and arms laying naturally at the sides, start the measuring tape at the base of the highest vertebrae. Extend the tape over the high point of the shoulder and down the arm, to the point 1 inch below the wrist bone.
Chest — Wrap the tape around the widest part of the chest so it fits snugly without being tight. Add 1 inch to the recorded number to estimate coat size.
Over-arm — Stand with arms laying regularly at your sides and wrap the tape around the chest and biceps. Subtract 7 inches from this number to estimate coat size. The final number should be roughly the same as the the one recorded in step 3.
Coat — After determining coat size from steps 3 & 4, determine if you will need a short, regular, long, or extra long coat based on height.
Waist — Wrap the measuring tape around your waist at navel height. Note that tuxedo pants are typically worn higher than casual pants.
Outseam — Starting at navel height, measure from the outside of the leg to the desired length.
Shoe — Record your formal shoe size.
